The Detroit Tigers could be getting a much needed boost to their offense later this month as outfileder Carlos Guillen is set to begin a rehab assignment this weekend.
Guillen, sidelined since May with shoulder inflammation, has been taking batting practice with the Tigers during their current home stand. He is swinging pain-free and has reportedly been feeling so good that he has been taking extra swings.
"He's felt very strong," manager Jim Leyland said. "He hit a lot."
The Tigers don't expect to rush Guillen through the rehab stint, and with all-star breaks coming next week for both AA and AAA, it is likely Guillen will begin his assignment with Class A Lakeland.
With normal progression through the farm system, it is likely Guillen could be back in action for the Tigers by the end of this month.
