Padres placed catcher Henry Blanco on the 15-day disabled list on Sunday due to a strained right hamstring. He becomes the second catcher on the disabled list for the San Diego Padres, joining Nick Hundley who has fractured left wrist.
In response to the injury they called up Jose Lobaton who will join Eliezer Alfonzo as the teams only catchers left on the roster. Lobaton, 24, entered the season on the 40-man roster and is hitting .241 in 133 at-bats in AAA.
The Padres designated Edwin Moreno for assignment to make room for Lobaton on the roster. Moreno was 1-4 with a 4.84 ERA in 22.1 innings for San Diego.
Blanco, a veteran catcher well known for his defense, was hitting .218 with 4 home runs in 110 at-bats. Hundley, who has been out since June 18th, is hitting .236 in 140 at-bats.
Alfonzo, who was called up following Hundley's injury, had been signed by the team as a minor league free agent last November.
