The Los Angeles Dodgers were active making room on their roster on Thursday, with more moves to come on Friday including the much anticipated return of slugger Manny Ramirez from his 50-game suspension.
Left handed pitcher Eric Stults was activated from the 15-day disabled list, but was later in the day optioned to the minors. Stults was recovering from a sprained thumb and in nine starts for the Dodgers is 4-2 with a 4.80 ERA.
Also optioned was catcher A.J. Ellis who had been called up in mid-June. Ellis played sparingly as the third catcher and was hitless in 4 at-bats.
Mitch Jones, who was called up on June 16th and made his major league debut that night at the age of 31, was designated for assignment by the Dodgers. The right fielder appeared mostly as a pinch hitter, and had 4 hits in 13 at-bats. He will now have 10 days in which to clear waivers, be traded, or released by the Dodgers before he can be sent back to the minors.
Ramirez will be activated on Friday from his suspension for violating Major League Baseball's Performance Enhancing Drug policy, but the Dodgers still have another spot on the active roster that must be filled. Pitcher Claudio Vargas is rehabbing from his sprained elbow and may get recalled, but that would require another move to make space on the 40-man roster which Vargas is not on.
